Nanopore sequencing. Computer artwork of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) strand (orange) passing through a nanopore in a graphene sheet (square). Nanopore sequencing is a method for determining the order in which nucleotides occur on a strand of DNA (DNA sequencing). It involves pulling a DNA strand through a tiny hole (the nanopore) in a membrane suspended in a salt solution with a voltage applied across it. Ions moving from one side of the membrane to the other create an electric current. As each of four different DNA bases passes through the pore, the current strength decreases to a different extent, making it possible to rapidly sequence the bases.
