Proposals for Charing Cross/Clerkenwell/Theobolds Road Shaftesbury Av, 1855 map

'Proposed Metropolitan Improvements referred to by Rev Walter Blunt in his evidence of 19th June 1855'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Rev Walter Blunt. Provenance: "Report from the Select Committee on Metropolitan Communications; together with the proceedings of the Committee, minutes of evidence and appendix", order by The House of Commons, to be printed, 23 July 1855, Henry Hansard. Type: Antique map with original colour, prepared for consideration by the British Parliamentary Select Committee on Metropolitan Communication. The map indicates Rev Blunt's proposals to improve the flow of London's traffic in the rapidly growing city's congested streets. Many of these proposals were eventually undertaken by the Mteropolitan Board of Works. The map indicates in yellow the main existing London thoroughfares. The streets coloured orange are those proposed by The Reverend Blunt. These include Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road (developed under an 1877 Act of Parliament), Theobold's Road and Clerkenwell Road (constructed 1874-78). Also proposed is an east west road linking Holborn to Commercial Road (never developed).
