Earthquake damage. Fence offset by about metres by the earthquake that struck California, USA, on 18th April 1906. The epicentre was just off the coast of the city of San Francisco, California, USA. It is purported to be the most damaging earthquake in US history and had an estimated magnitude of on the Richter scale. It revealed the existence and significance of the San Andreas fault to earth scientists, initiating the study of earthquakes as a discipline (seismology).
