The other specimen, is a fiei<;;ht-engine, having eight driving-wheels, and adiipted to the use ofcoal. This fellow will pullthe load of four or live hun-dred horses. lie is ofenormous weight—some ofthem, we believe, as high as thirty or forty tons, or even more ;— but every wheel being a driver, the weight is dis-tributed so nicely as to do no more actual injury to the rail than if themachine were one-half lighter, and the weight thrown on two or fourwheels, as in the case of the passenger-engine. These machines havebeen brought to their present unprecedented capacity, strength and use-fulness, through the exertions and mechanical genius of Mr. Winans, theirmanufacturer ; and the mere difference presented by their appearancewith the machines formerly in use, is sufficiently suggestive of the extra-ordinary progress made in all the ramifications and details of the railroa
