Lilac Poppies at Sunset, Brixworth, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England, UK
The subtle hues of twilight have cast a cool tone across the sky and fields of lilac poppies. The Opium Poppies, Papaver somniferum, are harvested in late summer to provide pain relieving drugs for the NHS. The heads are dried and the seed removed from the capsules for use in the food industry this can be up to 10 000 in a single flower. The seed pods are chopped dried and turned into pellets to be transported. They are then made into morphine and codeine. Opium is produced from a gummy substance found in the seed pod. Codeine and morphine are derived from opium.
