Replica of John Snow's ether inhaler, 1847. John Snow (1813-58) was a British physician. He designed this apparatus to safely administer ether to patients during surgical and obstetric procedures. The apparatus is a vaporizer consisting of a rectangular metal hot water bath, spiral baffle in a vaporizing chamber, valves, wide bore tubing and facepiece through which the patient inhaled the anaesthetic ether vapour.
