Scuol, Graubünden or Grisons canton, Switzerland: white sgraffito decoration with painted detailing picked out in orange complements the light green panelled woodwork, centred on a stable door, filling the round-arched entrance to this restored family house entered over a cobbled path in Scuol Sot, the old town built close to the alpine River Inn or En. Scuol Sot is a maze of narrow, winding stone-paved lanes, cobbled alleys and small squares centred on bubbling spring-water fountains. Many of its traditional Engadiner houses have been renovated in recent decades, with features such as bread ovens, painted coats of family arms and ancient inscriptions carefully preserved by new owners. Many of the inscriptions are in Romansh, a legacy language of the Roman Empire still spoken by about half of the inhabitants of this Lower Engadine Valley spa town. This house features the initials ICB scratched in sgraffito above the archway and towards the top right of this image, the lower part of an oriel window known in Romansh as a ‘balcun tort’ is decorated with orange flowers. Oriel windows of this type are common amongst the older properties in Scuol, but are not found anywhere else in Switzerland. Their double aspect allowed householders to view their street in both directions – and keep a watchful eye on their neighbours.
