In thefloors of the magazines and that of the longpassage at theback were contrived the safe-deposits which held thevaluables of the palace : small rectangular sunken pits, faced with stone slabs. These are known by the name ofKaa-eXXaii given them by the diggers. The storey abovethe magazines and passage (which must have been abso-lutely dark) may have been occupied by the morepublic rooms of the building; it has entirely dis-appeared, as here, on the top of the hill, before excava-tion the earth barely covered the lower courses of thewalls of the magazine. At the back of the passage, which is the centre of the building on this side, certainsemi-public rooms faced on to the central court, andamong them is a room which may have been a sort of r/.ATE xxrjj.
