Since the Hubble Space Telescope was the first space observatory designed for repair in space, it was important to determine what the astronauts needed to make maintenance and repair in space possible. Astronauts spent hours of underwater training practicing potential repairs. This helped designers ensure the telescope had adequate handholds and foot restraints to make repair possible. Tools for the repairs had to be designed and tested. Many hours of simulations were necessary to prepare the crews for the difficulties they would face in the microgravity environment.
