On the curved portion ofthe track, wooden ties were used, with li in. of well-tamped pea gravel, on heavy concrete base. Sandstoneblocks, well grouted with rich cement, were used aswearing surface throughout the entire installation. The special work used was made by the Buda Com-pany, and consisted of the insert frog and solid mangan-ese double-tongue switches. It is very interesting to note that the claims for theoriginal construction have been borne out, in that after. SPECIAL WORK IN WHICH OLD STEEL RAIL IS UTILIZEDFOR TIES WITH THE AID OF GAS WELDING three years of use under very heavy freight traffic therewas no sign whatsoever of deterioration of steel tieor joints. Further there was no indication that waterhad affected the structure, the original blocks being stillin proper position, and the original concrete clinging tothe rail. This showed that very little, if any, verticalmotion had developed, especially at the joints, which hadpurposely been so placed as to come over the center ofthe steel tie, and thus to rest firmly on the steel plate. In this connection, it appears to me one of the abso-lutely essential requirements of good concrete track con-struction is that traffic be absolutely discontinued fromsuch installation until the concrete has had a number ofdays to set. In addition, in case of double-track con-struction, a longitudinal expansion joint should be leftbetween the two tracks and, as cracks develop fr
