Peas for an early crop, should be sown as soon as the ground is in working condition. The soil for their reception should be light, dry and well sheltered. Mild manure, such as leaf mold, has a beneficial effect; but for many of the varieties, the soil cannot be too rich. For general crops, the ground should be well manured the previous year, which causes them to yield more abundantly. When grown as a market crop, peas are never staked, and are sown in single rows, two or three inches deep, and from two to three feet apart, according to the variety or strength of the soil. When grown in small quantities for private use, they are generally sown in double rows, six or eight inches apart, and the tall varieties staked up by brush. One quart to 75 feet of drill ; two or three bushels to the acre. Peas ordered by mail are subject to an extra charge of fifteen cents per quart for postage. Pints furnished at quart rates. 27.
