Louis Saint-Just (1767-1794). 1868 illustration of the French military and political leader during the French Revolution. Saint-Just became a major leader of the government of the French First Republic. He spearheaded the movement to execute King Louis XVI and later drafted the radical French Constitution of 1793. He was a close friend of Maximilien Robespierre, one of the best-known and influential figures of the French Revolution (1789-1799), particularly the Reign of Terror (1792-1794). Saint-Just became the public face of the Terror and organised the arrests and prosecutions of many of the most famous figures of the Revolution. He was executed in 1794, along with Robespierre, for his role in the Terror's brutal excesses.
