Dewstoe is a New Yorker by birth, hisearly days having been spent in Ontario County, in thatState. He was born on May 10, 1841, and when he wassix years of age his parents removed to Flint, Mich.,where he went to school and where he enlisted in theSecond Michigan Infantry, in May, 1861. After the firstbattle of Bull Run he was ordered transferred to thesignal service, and he participated in all the battles ofthe Army of the Potomac.
