One of the two Rostral Columns on Vasilevsky Island St Petersburg


The two monumental rostral columns situated on the Strelka at the tip of Vasilevsky Island in St Petersburg were designed by T de Thomon and erected in 1810 The seated figure at the base is one of the four statues representing the great rivers of Russia the Neva Volga Dnieper and Volkhov Designed to act as lighthouses to guide ships in the busy port area around the Strelka the columns were oil fired and are still lit on special occasions
