Sunrise over the Gribben, as seen from Charlestown

The harbour village of Charlestown was designed and built by local landowner Charles Rashleigh (after whom it was named) and was built between 1790 and 1810 for the export of copper and china clay. Throughout the nineteenth century the dock was packed with ships and the harbour side sheds and warehouses thronged with complementary businesses: boatbuilding, rope making, brickworks, lime burning, net houses, bark houses and pilchard curing. It has now gained World Heritage Status, underlying its past importance to the mining industry of Cornwall. Charlestown Harbour and the famous fleet of square riggers is now privately owned by Square Sail Ltd. Domestic and international production companies feature the harbour and the fleet in many TV and film productions. Chris Potter is the only photographer to gain authority from Square Sail Ltd to sell photographs of the harbour and fleet, with property releases available on request for all images.
