In spiteof the encroachment of the sea, the waters of the Kennebec are fresh to about fifteen milesfrom the rivers mouth and so pure that the ice taken therefrom has become world-famousfor its quality. In the Spring, after the ice has broken up and has been hurried by the current out tosea, come many great vessels seeking cargoes of the frozen product of the Kennebec.
