It is built on ground allotedto Archbishop Tenisons estate in Lambeth. Respecting the Vicars Oak, the Magna Britannia gives thefollowing account: Here was a great wood, called Norwood, belonging to theArchbishop, wherein was anciently a tree, called the VicarsOak, where four parishes meet, as it were, in one point. It issaid to have consisted wholly of oaks, and among them was onethat bore miseltoe, which some were so hardy as to cut for the Hiato ?. of Drawn & Etched by T. Allen. But they proved unfortunate afterit; for one of them fell lame, another lost an eye. At length inthe year 1678, a certain man, notwithstanding he was warnedagainst it, upon account of what others had suffered, adven-tured to cut the tree down, and he soon after broke his leg.
