ATS RECRUITING CORPORALS OF NORTHERN COMMAND - Sergt. Harrissonat Northern Command, HQ., Sgt. Harrisson comes originally from Hobart, Tasmania. She was a Kindergarten teacher, and left Tasmania in January 1938 with the intention of obtaining a post in a similar capacity on the Asutralian mainland. There was some delay over this, and whilst waiting, she took a position as companion to a young married with three children, in the Otway Ranges, South West Victoria. Miss Harrison had managed to save 10 through her various appointments afterwards, and relatives financed the balance of her fare to England- so she left in May 1939 with a very fixed purpose in mind - namely, to acquire more knowledge of the teaching profession in England, which eventually she reached in the summer of 1939 and obtained an appointment first in Bucks and then Hants. After a few weeks she attended a summer school in Ripon, Yorks, to add further teaching experience with a view to imparting this knowledge on her return to Australia. Hiss Harrisson even cycled to Scotland, staying at Youth Hostels on the way (due to lack of money). When war broke out, she joined the ATS at Portsmouth were she stayed for nearly 10 months, and then on to a three months stay in London during one of the city's worst blitzes. Finally, she was sent to Leeds and is there now as a sergeant in the Pay Corp British Army
