During the time that the air from the reservoir is maintainedat the desired pressure by the action of the valve, the pump i>released from all duty, simply working back and forth, but exert-ing no pressure against the air contained in the reservoir, andsimply pumping the atmosphere through an open port in theautomatic valve, the air being forced through the same port to theatmosphere again. As soon as the pressure in the reservoir has been reduced byan application of air, the automatic valve is instantly releasedand the pump goes into operation, and in a few revolutions raisesthe pressure to the maximum point, when the valve again operatesand the pressure is maintained in the reservoir until it is reducedby another application of the brakes.
