[April 15,1 The i lined by the authors method in one hour and well with those yielded by Berg nm andJunks ptocora in 7—8 hours. :i example of the application of the method tof the nmnufacturi- the anthor examined the influence of washing at the boiling tempera-ture an Ie shown in the followingcurve-diagram. S/a fit/ify. after / Washings. After the fifth washing in the boiling vessel, thestability of the product had attained the desiredstandard. The process of beating the gun-cotton in ahollander is next referred to, and the author states thatthe disintegration has a markedly favourable influence-on the stability of the explosive, quite apart from itsaction in promoting the washing. In this connectionit is pointed out that the specimen of gun-cotton whichafter five washings behaved satisfactorily with regard tostability, was tested after being ground ; when tested inthe unground condition, excessive pressure was developedin the first minute, and after a short time, the gun-cottonexploded. The relation between the state of divisionof the material and its stability was also clearly shownby cutting a specimen of dried, unground gun-cottonwith scissors successively into smaller and smaller pieces, and testing it from time to time. It is recommended thatall samples of gun-cotton before being tested
