The trunk of a large beech tree is removed from Leeds and Liverpool canal at Gathurst near Wigan Lancashire

A large piece of the trunk of a beech tree is winched out of the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Sometime over the weekend of 14th and 15th of May 2016 a large beech tree fell into the Leeds and Liverpool canal between Crooke and Gathurst on the western side of Wigan. This closed the canal to all boat traffic. Contractors working for the Canal and River Trust initially removed some of the branches, but had to bring in heavy winching machinery through the woodland to drag the trunk of the tree out onto the bank. One of the contractors men had to get suited up to go in the water to fixing a wire hawser around the tree and this has now been attached to a wire rope running from the tractor in the woods. The trunk was then dragged onto the bank with the assistance of a second winch attached to an excavator.
