Soil culture and modern farm methods . ng necessary to both micro-organisms and plant roots,it is reasonable to expect more to be available in a roomy seed-bed thanin a shallow one. 44 storing and Utilizing Water Water is stored just in proportion to the permeability of the seed-bedand the texture of the subsoil. After the plants have utilized the waterwhich adheres to the particles of soil in its passage downward, theythen begin to draw by the process of capillary attraction, upon thewater which has been stored in the subsoil. In order to insure perfectcapillarity, there must be no large air spaces either at the bottom of thefuiTow or in the body of the seed-bed. In other words, there should bea medium compact condition of the soil particles. Before the plowturns surface trash and surface lumps under, the disc harrow should beused. Trash on the bottom of the seed-bed acts as an insulation, onaccount of the large air spaces, which effectually stop the upwardmovement of water. The disc harrow not only pulverizes lumps which. j#viJJ»**^..^-^.**«> Disc Harrow .. After the ground isplowed, it should be again disced in order to insure pulverization andcompactness of the portion of the soil which has been turned up by theplow. Again, the seed-bed should be disced and harrowed so as to alterthe position and condition of the soil particles in order that changes intheir chemical composition may be brought about by contact with eachother, by the action of air and water and by micro-organisms. Furthermore, the seed-bed should be mellow and at the same time firm enough to afford proper support to the plant. It should be looseenough
