Without the limiting valveabout 150 per cent, braking power is ob-tained in emergency; incorporating thevalve reduces the emergency brakingpower to about 113 per cent., which morenearly or temporarily conforms to emer-gency pressure developed by triple valveequipments. Now, when an attempt is made to locatethe source of any disorder of the uni-versal valve, it must be remembered thatthe equalizing piston is operated by varia-tions in brake pipe and auxiliary reservoirpressure, and that emergency reservoirpressure is always present between the. We have called attention to the use oftwo emergency reservoirs or rather adivided emergency reservoir volume dur-ing the transition period. With this ar-rangement a small 10 x 33 emergencyreservoir is added, and a cut out or limit-ing valve is placed in the pipe leading tothe large emergency reservoir; thus inemergency applications the large volume iscut off from the brake cylinder until suchtime as all cars are equipped with univer- two pistons of the release valve structure, and at the present time all valves are tobe operated in direct release position anduntil such time as a sufficient number ofcars are equipped to warrant the use ofgraduated release. To cut out the universal valve, closethe stop cock in the brake pipe and bleedal
