Ernest Thompson Seton, who collected the holotype, cited the type locality as "Marvine Lodge, Garfield Co., ; (1929, 2:484). Marvine Lodge and most of Marvine Mountain are in extreme eastern Rio Blanco County. Hagmeier (1956:153) remarked that the marten in Colorado occurred "... as far east as western Arapahoe County. . ." At that latitude, the easternmost county of occurrence probably is Jefferson. Yeager (1950) was cited as authority for the Arapahoe County record; I find no reference in the latter paper to Arapahoe County. Hagmeier (1961) studied geographic vari- ation in M. americana, concluding that the use of subspecific nomenclature in the "caurina group" of nominal races did not describe ob- served variation adequately. Long (1965: 689) reviewed Hagmeier's work and con- cluded that two subspecies could be recog- nized in Wyoming. In view of that usage in Wyoming, the name origenes is maintained herein for Coloradan martens.
