A late 19th century view of sailing ships anchored on the River Fowey in the port town of Fowey in south Cornwall, England. The town, in existence since well before the Norman invasion has a natural harbour at the river estuary which enabled it to become an important trading centre. Privateers also made use of the sheltered harbourage. In later years China clay was exported.
