Nostradamus' book. Title page of Paraphrase de C. Galen (1557), a book by the French physician and astrologer Nostradamus (1503-66) on the works of the Roman physician Galen. The page features a woodcut of Nostrodamus viewing the sky and making astrological notes. Born Michel de Notre Dame, Nostradamus rose to prominence as a gifted healer whilst dealing with an outbreak of the plague. He eventually became a personal physician to King Charles IX. In 1555 he published Centuries, a series of astrological predictions from 1550 to the supposed end of the world in 3793. It became popular despite the prophecies within it being so vague as to allow a range of interpretations.
