Sunlit stairs, fountain and bougainvillea at the remains of the Theatre de St Pierre, Martinique following the eruption of Mount Pelee in 1902

In 1902 Mount Pelee erupted without warning and completely engulfed the town of St Pierre killing almost all 28,000 inhabitants of the town. St Pierre was known as the Paris of the Caribbean and boasted a highly regarded theatre. The steps shown here are the only remains of that theatre relatively unscathed. The remainder was almost completely destroyed.
