Late autumn sunlight on the 15th-century Lindisfarne Castle on Lindisfarne Holy Island in Northumberland, Britain. Lindisfarne Castle acted as a defence against border raids by Vikings from Scandinavia and Scottish invaders. The castle nestles on a small hill located on Holy Island facing the north sea near the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, northern England The small tidal island is only accessible from the mainland at low tide using a causeway at certain times of the day. Holy Island is the birthplace of Christianity bought by Saint Aiden in 635AD in Angelo-Saxon times. From here the Christian message spread around the world. Saint Aiden founded the monastery and Saint Cuthbert, Lindisfarne Priory, and still a place of pilgrimage today.
