FlG. 142.—Incisions made by Dejerine in a case of cortical lesion previous to hardening. EXAMINATION OF THE SKULL AND BRAIN _-- Meynerts Method, slightly modified by Blackburn.—Thebrain is placed with its base upward and the cerebellar end towardsthe operator. The cerebellum is elevated and the pia mater cut throughabove the corpora quadrigemina, around the crura, and along theinner margins of the temporal lobes until the middle cerebral arteriesare reached. The Sylvian fissures are opened to their entire extent, the opercula are raised, and the insular lobes exposed to their limitingfurrows. The apices of the temporal lobes are now elevated, and, with theknife held nearly horizontal, their junction with the base is cut throughuntil the anterior extremities of the descending cornua are knife is inserted in the descending horn, and the incision is carriedbackward as far as the posterior angle of the insula, or even somedistance beyond it, severing some of the convolutions
