(Sir Joseph Fayrer.). > UJ X DX > z UJ X < oXh ( 127 ) Why I was christened Thomas Henry I do not know ; but it is a curious chancethat my parents should have fixed for my usual denomination upon the name of thatparticular Apostle with whom I have always felt most sympathy (Autobiography ofT. H. H.) I desired to obtain a Professorship of either Physiology or ComparativeAnatomy. . At last, in 1845, on the translation of my warm friend EdwardForbes to Edinburgh, Sir Henry de la Beche, the Director-General of the GeologicalSurvey, offered me the post Forbes vacated of Pateontologist and Lecturer on NaturalHistory. I refused the former point blank, and accepted the latter only provisionally, telling Sir Henry that I did not care for fossils, and that I should give up naturalhistory as soon as I could get a physiological post. But I held the office for thirty-oneyears, and a large part of my work has been paheontological. The portrait in the text is taken from a replica of the bronzemedallion design
