Thepresent population is 30,000. I ITS STONE SQUAREKS. Tliis was a very ancient seaport of Phenicia, 20miles N. of Beiiiit, and 182 miles from Jerusalem, viaJoppa and the Mediterranean. Gebal was situated on a spur of Lebanon, close tothe shore, and had a fine harbor, but which is nowfilled with sand, ruins of quays, and buildings. The inhabitants were called Giblites— stone-squarers. Hewers of stone from Gebal were em-ployed on Soloinon^s Temple. The ruins consist of the remains of a castle andextensive walls, and of beautiful columns. The ruinsof the castle exhibit some of the best specimens ofancient masonry to be found in Palestine. The stonesin its walls are beveled, and some of them are 20 feetin length. The style of the columns, and the extentof the walls, indicate the size and importance of thecity. m L
