Phantom pain after amputation. Artwork of a man experiencing phantom pain (red flash) from his amputated hand (left). This is caused by stimuli to the motor and pre-motor cortical areas of his brain (upper centre) that were previously associated with controlling the hand. This is indicated by the hand 'symbol' at upper right. The feelings can range from sensation of posture and presence, to movement, pressure, touch, heat and cold, itchiness and pain. Various treatments are possible, ranging from therapy to drugs and brain surgery.
