Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount palmerston (1784-1865), British politician and Prime Minister. Born in Westminster as heir to an Irish peerage, he attended Harrow School, the University of Edinburgh and St, John's Ciollege Cambridge. In 1807 he was elected a Member of Parliament for the Tory party and was made Secretary at War from 1809-28. He resigned a year later, switching to the Whigs (later called the Liberal Party) where he became Foreign Secretary in 1830. In 1852 he was made Home Secretary and won two terms as Prime Minister (1855-58 and 1859-65). He is most remembered for his aggressive, interventionist approach to foreign matters, supporting liberal revolutions in continental Europe, vigorously defending other British interests and consistently opposing slavery around the world. He was the oldest Prime Minister to die while still in office.
