There was somuch to see that, enthusi-astic fisherman as I am,this sport was left day Id sail across thesound to Dauphinc island, which for fourteen miles pro-tects the inland waters from the fury ofthe Gulf storms, and walk through theforest of great pines to the Gulf sideand cHmb the hills of sand blown upfrom the shore until they have coveredthe pine trees, leaving only the featheiedtops standing above. From these hillsone looks far out into the deep, bluewaters of the Gulf, sometimes freckledwhite by the wind. What a gorgeousplace it is for a plunge in the surf! Thehouses are all on the north shore of theisland, and here is a beach fourteen mileslong, of hard, fine dazzling white sandsloping gently down to the water linewhere the waves curl up and rush hissing. PINE TREES ON DAUPHINE ISI-AND. and curling in their spent force as thewater flows back ready for another trial. Ihope this beach may never be desecratedby a summer hotel and board walk, but it is too enticing to escape. To sitin the cool shade of the pine treesenjoying their balsam fragrance, whilethe wind is whispering secrets throughtheir tops, and look out over this beau-tiful beach with the never-ceasing surfbeating upon it, and beyond the watersof the Gulf with here and there a sailvisible ! What an enticing picture andhow the summer tourist would gloatover the circulars describing it! Imag-ine a lot of people dressed in the 714 MOBILE IN MIDSUMMER. hideous regulation bathing suit; fat orlean, awkward and gawky, disportingthemsehes in this place ! It is worsethan nightmare to think ot it. Another day I would visit the NorthShore with its orange groves and pome-granates, pears and figs, grapes andberries of all kinds, bananas and adozen other kinds of fruit.
