Lux et Gloria. The sun is going down creating an impressive sky over the Victor Emmanuel II National Monument or Vittoriano, called also Altar of the Fatherland, a national monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill, and the location of the Altare della Patria is full of meaning: Ever since Rome’s foundation, the hill has been as a symbol of the greatness of the city. Definitely an impressive building, but many Italians describe it as "pharaonic", because some remarkable buildings were demolished towards the side of piazza Venezia so that it has an unobstructed perspective. In fact, at the end of the 19th century, the decision was made to demolish many of the remains on Capitoline Hill. The project, designed by architect Giuseppe Sacconi, drew inspiration from the great Greek sanctuaries, such as the Pergamon Altar and the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia. Nowadays the Vittoriano is regarded as a national symbol of Italy and every year it hosts important national celebrations.
