(Fig. 40).The cylinder needles are re-ciprocated vertically in slots inthe periphery of the needle cylin-ders, as shown in the illustra-tion. Needle cylinders are us-ually constructed from steelforgings of good quality, as therequirements are very severe;the needle walls or lands shouldbe hard enough not to jam tooeasily, and yet not hard enoughto break. The cut across theface of the cylinderfor the needle,as at A, is generally called theneedle slot; the part B, betweenthe slots, is called the land, orsometimes, the needle slot is widened at the top,as at H,- to clear the yarn whendrawn into the slot by the widened part is often calledthe sinker cut.
