Mountain Jews
The so-called "Red Town" on the left bank of the Qudyal river became a refuge for Jewish communities at least from the days of Nadir Shah (XVIII Century Persia) right up to the Second World War and the Nazi advance onto the Caucasus - an advance stopped by the Red Army not that far from here. Just over 3'500 Jews live here at least some of the time (most of the houses were empty when I visited, I was told that the owners liked mostly in Baku and perhaps Moscow). The Mountain Jew community was, however, well integrated as a whole into the Azeri community (since they were neither Bolsheviks nor Armenian!)
