Stained light micrograph showing pathogenic fungi (Paracoccidioides sp.) cells in the sputum (saliva and mucus) of a patient with paracoccidioidomycosis. Paracoccidioidomycosis is a disease which can result from inhaling Paracoccidioides sp. spores but in most cases inhalation does not have any effect. Paracoccidioidomycosis primarily affects the lungs and skin, potentially causing coughing, lesions, fatigue and swelling of the spleen, liver and lymph nodes. Treatment typically involves a course of antifungal medication for around a year.
