Logberg at Thingvellir, site of the old Icelandic Parliament


The Lögberg -- a rock from which speeches were made, now marked with the Icelandic flag -- at the site of the ancient Icelandic Parliament, at Þingvellir, which is located in a rift valley formed over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Icelandic chieftains first gathered at the site in the 10th Century and the Parliament last met there in 1789. The foundation of the Republic of Iceland was declared at Þingvellir in 1944.
