LUTHER BURBANK for the ancestors of our cherry in their widelyseparated habitats and with their widely diversi-fied traits and habits. But of course in making practical studies forthe development of the mental blue print withits forecast of qualities of our new cherry, wemust perforce be guided largely by the observedqualities of the parent stock with which we what were the qualities of the remoteancestors, we can only infer. But we can seefor ourselves what are the qualities of the fruitbefore us. We know, then, pretty definitely what we mayexpect as to one-half the traits of a hybrid thatwill result when we cross two varieties of cherriesin our orchard. The other half must be somewhatmatter of conjecture, to be revealed by theactual product or, as is practically the case, bysucceeding generations. What we actually do, then, in practice, is totake flowers from a cherry tree that has beenobserved to bear fruit somewhat earlier thanneighboring trees, and with this pollen
