By this sweeping measure, to which noparallel is to be found in the history of othe»-countries, Hwangti silenced during the lastfew years of his life the criticisms of his chiefenemies, but in revenge his memory has hadto bear for two thousand years the sully ofan inexcusable act of tryanny and narrow-mindedness. The price will be pronouncedtoo heavy for what was a momentary gratifi-cation. The reign of Hwangti was not prolongedmany years after the burning of the 2IO B. C. he was seized with a seriousillness, to which he succumbed, partlybecause he took no precautions, and partly,no doubt, through the incompetence of hisphysicians.
