Witley Court country house in Worcester England. A hundred years ago, Witley Court was one of England's great country houses, hosting many extravagant parties. It was built by Thomas Foley in 1655 on the site of a former manor house near Great Witley. Today it is a spectacular ruin, the result of a disastrous fire in 1937. It is in the is in the care of English Heritage. The vast and rambling remains of the palatial 19th-century mansion are surrounded by magnificent landscaped gardens, which still contain huge stone fountains. The largest, the Poseidon, representing Perseus and Andromeda reaches a height of 93 feet. In 2003 Witley Court's owners, the Wigington family, placed the freehold for sale on Internet auction site eBay for £975,000.
