Madonna lily, Madonnalilja, (Lilium candidum)

Madonna lilies are depicted on wall paintings at the Minoan palace of Knossos. The Madonna Lily symbolizes purity for Roman Catholic Christians. Medieval depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary usually show her clutching these flowers. The image of the Madonna lily is minted on the New Israeli Shekel.
