Preparing for an execution, Newgate, London, England in the 19th century
Original engraving from The Illustrated London news of 26 February 1848. From an article entitled picturesque sketches of London past & present. Two executions had taken place the previous year in 1847 and many more took place until the last Public hanging in 1868, so the sketch was presumably of the present rather than the past.
