Little success, however, wasattained, and no permanent results followed. The plain fact is, distasteful though it be,that after all the lavish outpouring of lives inLiberia, up to 1883 Africa had been too muchfor Methodism. In that year it was officiallyannounced: The Parent Society has no whitemissionary at present in Africa, and its workhas been greatly lessened in that 108 UNDER THE CRESCENT
