But a trolley line now runs from the center of Washing-ton to the north gate at Mount Vernon, reaching the mansionin an hour. The cars cross the famous Long Bridge overthe Potomac, and speed on their way through woods andover fields fraught with memories of the Civil War; throughAlexandria and past Christ Church, where Washington at-tended, and many other scenes once familiar to him whenliving the life of a plain Virginia planter.
