Germinating plant. Shoot growing from the seed of a bean plant. The seed of a bean plant is called a bean. The tip of the bean (lower centre) has split and is seen surrounded by soil. It is the stored nutrients in the bean that are used to form this shoot, as well as roots (not seen). The leaves on the tip of the shoot will be used to create more nutrients through the process of photosynthesis. The roots will extract raw materials and water from the soil.
