U Hausvogteiplatz Underground U-Bahn railway station on the U2 line designed by Alfred Grenander opened on 1 October 1908 in Mitte, Berlin. Interior & name plate It was on Berlin's second U-Bahn line, running from Potsdamer Platz on the initial Stammstrecke route to Spittelmarkt. It was named after the Prussian prison sited here at the former site of a bastion of the historic city fortification. At the Hausvogteiplatz train station, the architect Alfred Grenander designed the wall with small white tiles with yellow frames. The entrances and exits of the station were fairly narrow and the station is on a curve. Grenander designed a hexagonal ticket booth in Art Nouveau style at the eastern end of the station as it could not be accommodated underground. The station suffered considerable damage during the Second World War and water damage occurred in April due to the blasting of the Landwehr Canal. It was not possible to re-open the station in 1945 and the first trains on the A I and A II lines used the line but they did not stop at the station. The rebuilt station opened on January 7, 1950 and the subway station received new large grey tiles in the 1970s. During the GDR times, little changed in the station, but the trains of the former line A no longer went to Ruhleben or Krumme Lanke, as this was in the western sector of Berlin and the end of the line was now Thälmannplatz and Otto-Grotewohl-Straße (at present Mohrenstraße). After the reunification of Berlin, the train service was restored between Pankow in the east and Ruhleben in the west. As part of the complete renovation by the BVG, the stations between Alexanderplatz and the city centre are to be restored to their historical condition with views of Berlin's inner city in the advertising spaces on the station walls.
