Edinburgh, Scotland. Thu 28 April 2022. Musicians take part in a one-off LIVE performance of artist Cauleen Smith’s “H-E-L-L-O” at Collective Gallery on Calton Hill. The original work “H-E-L-L-O” is a 11 minute video which translates John Williams’ famous five-note musical motif from Stephen Spielberg’s film ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ into a greeting for sites around post-hurricane Katrina New Orleans. For this performance, six locally based musicians performed the five-note sequence from the film on their bass clef instruments at the historic sites across Calton Hill.

Cauleen Smith is an American born filmmaker and multimedia artist. She is best known for her experimental works that address the African-American identity, specifically the issues facing black women today. Smith is best known for her feature film Drylongso and currently teaches in the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts. Musicians for this performance were: Jonathan Gawn - TUBA Atzi Muramatsu - CELLO Zain Cruikshank - BASS GUITAR Eilis O’Keefe - EUPHONIUM Anthony Santiago - BASS TROMBONE Victoria Lopez - BASSOON
