Contrast between the Renaissance church of Santa Maria Assunta (1552) and the modern palaces (1969-1973) in the Carignano district, Genoa, Italy

Carignano is a residential neighborhood in the center of Genoa, located on a hill overlooking the sea. On the top of the hill dominates the imposing basilica of S. Maria Assunta (1552), one of the most valuable Genoese religious ancient tenements of Via Madre di Dio, Via dei Servi and Via del Colle, partly damaged or destroyed by the bombings of the Second World War, with the systematic application of the urban plan realized between 1969 and 1973 completely disappeared in order to give way to modern management centers, that they accommodate the offices of the Liguria Region, of communal agencies and private companies. the radical urban reorganization was seen by many Genoese above all as the disintegration of a consolidated social fabric, of a popular world that disappeared together with the old houses, replaced by cold modern architecture. Even today, many years later, it is not uncommon for the terms destruction and speculation to be used to define these urban operations.
